Asthma Basics for Children    Print Page

basicsThe Asthma Basics for Children program is designed to help early childhood educators and parents of children under age 7 learn to manage asthma. Program materials include a separate handbook and curriculum for educating parents and early childhood educators. The Instructor's Guide contains both curricula and the two handbooks cover the basics of asthma management along with practical activities for preschool-age children to learn about asthma. The handbook for early childhood educators also provides information on how to create an asthma program at the child care center.

Program Goals

The purpose of this program is to educate parents of children under age 7 with asthma and early childhood educators about the basics of asthma management. In addition, early childhood educators learn how to create an asthma program at their child care center.

Program Materials

The Asthma Basics for Children program kit includes:

  • An Instructor's Guide (curricula for educating both parents and early childhood educators)
  • One Early Childhood Educators' Handbook
  • Two Parent Handbooks (1 English, 1 Spanish)

Preparation of Instructors

Instructors for this program should be health professionals such as nurses, respiratory therapists, physicians and pharmacists familiar with pediatric asthma management. The Instructor's Guide provides a detailed outline of each curriculum with talking points, references to pages in the handbooks and the time needed for each activity.

Program Development

The Asthma Basics for Children program was developed by a team of educators from Columbia University in collaboration with local asthma coalitions and published in 2003.
