Educational Programs for Teaching Patients

AAFA offers many patient education programs for all ages in English and Spanish. You can download many items below free-of-charge. You can order others through AAFA. You can also download items for free on the Patients and Caregivers web page. Also, if your young patient has food allergies, visit Kids With Food Allergies. It’s a division of AAFA and has extra resources.

ASTHMA Care for Adults Program

This program is for teaching adults and their caregivers about proper asthma management. It is available in two formats: a print faciliated course for asthma educators and health care professionals who work with adults with asthma and an online, self-paced course for people with asthma or their caregivers.

Wee Breathers™ FREE TO DOWNLOAD

This program is for health professionals who teach parents of young children about managing asthma. Use it during home visits, one-on-one or in group classes for parents in child care centers. The full program includes:

Asthma Basics for Children

Asthma Basics for Children This program is for health professionals who teach both early childhood teachers and parents of young children to manage asthma. Early childhood teachers learn how to create an asthma program at their childcare centers. Activities help teach preschool children about asthma. The program has an instructor’s guide, a handbook for early childhood educators and two parent handbooks. One parent handbook is in English and one is in Spanish.

wee wheezersThis program is for health professionals who teach parents of young children about managing asthma. Parents learn how to find information and support. It also teaches them how to talk to caretakers and doctors. Parents go to four group sessions. Children join the last two sessions. The original kit included: instructor’s manual, training guide, slides (PDF and PowerPoint), instructor video, companion video and handouts for parents and children.

Wee Wheezers at Home*

This program is for health professionals who teach parents of young children about managing asthma. Health professionals hold eight weekly sessions in the home of a medically underserved family. Parent tools are at a fifth grade reading level. The original kit included: home visitor’s manual, scripts for eight sessions, manual for families and children, “My Triggers” coloring book, instructor video, companion video, handouts, and CD of checklists and assessment tools.

You Can Control Asthma  

This program is for health professionals who teach You-Can-Control-Asthmaschool-age children and their families about managing asthma. An implementation guide tells how to use the booklets in clinical, community, school and home settings. The program also has booklets for children and their parents. It teaches asthma management through pictures and activities. The book for kids is at a third-grade reading level. It helps them make choices and feel in control of their asthma. The book for families is at a fifth-grade reading level. It helps parents help their child manage their asthma.
